Since his early formative years as an architect, Philippe Schmit’s approach is informed by the continuous contact with the world of contemporary art in an intensive and ongoing dialogue with artists. Consistently developing its philosophy out of this initial experience, Philippe Schmit architects founds its work on a research-based attitude and is committed to the experiential aspects of architectural and urban design.
The practice engages on enhancing the value in use of a contemporary architecture rooted in the public realm, taking the project’s brief and specific constraints as a starting point.
Its projects are characterised by a sensitive appropriation of a site in reaction to its physical context, a sound use of materials emphasising their textural qualities and a spacesculpting treatment of light.
Out of the passion for material research grows a concern for the economic and environmental aspects in the use of construction and the project resources, aiming at the development of a lasting, carefully detailed architecture.
The projects are inscribed in an intensive process of continuous development from the initial concept to their completion. Philippe Schmit is supervising, together with an architect project leader, all of the practice’s projects through the different phases of their implementation. The team is committed to a culture of ongoing dialogue and develops consistent and strong working relationships with its clients and all project stakeholders. From the multicultural Luxembourg background, the practice is basically multilingual in its work.
The practice is currently working on a variety of projects of different sizes ranging from masterplanning to the reuse of public buildings and private houses.
