Infolab Manifesta 2
Documentation center for the European Biennial of Contemporary Art pdf
When Luxembourg decided to host the 2nd edition of the itinerant Manifesta biennial, it appeared that the city was lacking an adequate structure to host a public documentation centre (comprising artists’ catalogues, folders and flyers). Most of this documentation material was sourced from the Soros Centres, whose mission, particularly in Eastern Europe, was to familiarise the public at large with contemporary art. As the main exhibition venue of the biennial, Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain was chosen to host this Infolab. Schmit designed a cost-efficient bespoke shelving system using horizontal and vertical crossbars cut from oiled larch wood, which responded to the spacious exhibition galleries by proposing small, space-defining construction details, thus ensuring that even empty parts or shelf sections holding small-sized documents affirmed their spatial presence.
