Model type houses in Wincheringen
Series of 3 single-family wooden houses in a rural setting pdf
We designed a series of 3 model houses for the residential estate ‘Auf Mont’ next to the village of Wincheringen situated on the heights of the Mosel valley. The site is characterized by an undulating topography, offering wonderful views over the river valley and the adjacent village.
The ‘new urbanism’-like layout of the masterplan (300 plots for single-family houses, developed by a Miami-based practice) avoids any relation with the existing village, totally exploding the scale relationship between its historic fabric and the surrounding landscape. The houses proposed by the developer constitute an eclectic catalogue of so-called ‘architectural’ styles, largely defying all a (first generation) postmodern mind could ever think of.
Our design of single-family wooden houses for Hausing sa (a housing development company for ecological wood architecture operating on the same site) focuses on the typological aspects of economical housing: a family of houses, size 109/133/152 m2, constructed using standardized building elements common to all three types. Identified by a common architectural language, evoking vernacular and rural impressions, the houses offer very different characters, forms and spatial features. All types correpond to a low-energy/passive house standard.
